In a significant breakthrough for law enforcement, Rajanagaram police in East Godavari district successfully dismantled a mobile and jewellery theft gang that had been targeting passengers in public transport across multiple routes. The operation has brought relief to commuters who had been increasingly worried about rising petty theft incidents in the region.
Acting on repeated complaints from bus and auto passengers, police intensified surveillance along key routes connecting Rajanagaram, Kakinada road, and nearby rural junctions. The gang had been using a coordinated method where members would board crowded buses or autos, especially during peak travel hours, and identify vulnerable passengers carrying cash, gold chains, mobile phones, or bags.
According to officials, the accused would deliberately create distractions—such as pushing in crowded spaces, pretending to argue, or spilling small items—while another member quietly stole valuables without the victim noticing. In many cases, passengers only realized their belongings were missing after getting off the vehicle.
After weeks of investigation, CCTV footage analysis, and tracking suspicious movements, police identified two key suspects involved in the network. A targeted operation was conducted, leading to their arrest. During interrogation, the accused reportedly confessed to multiple thefts across Rajanagaram and surrounding mandals.
