The temple’s origins are deeply rooted in the Puranas, following the tragic event of Daksha Yajna.
- The Wrath of Shiva: Overcome with grief and rage after Goddess Sati immolated herself in the sacrificial fire of Daksha, Lord Shiva performed the cosmic dance of destruction, the Pralaya Tandavam. Out of his matted hair, he created Lord Veerabhadra (a fierce, multi-armed manifestation of Shiva) to destroy Daksha’s sacrifice.
- Calming the Divine Rage: Even after destroying the Yajna, Veerabhadra’s fury threatened to consume the universe. To pacify him, the holy sages and celestial beings prayed to the supreme Goddess. She manifested as Goddess Bhadrakali and appeared before him. Upon seeing her, his immense rage transformed into divine peace, and they were wedded at this very location.
- The Name ‘Muramalla’: It is believed that local demons (Mura) were slain or subdued here by the divine forces, giving the village its historic name.
