Located in Samarlakota (also known as Samalkot) in the Kakinada district of Andhra Pradesh, the Sri Chalukya Kumararama Bhimeswara Swamy Temple is a magnificent 9th-century structural wonder. It stands as one of the highly revered Pancharama Kshetras—five sacred ancient temples across Andhra Pradesh dedicated to Lord Shiva.
The temple is protected as a centrally managed Monument of National Importance, embodying centuries of deep mythological history and masterclass engineering.
🔱 The Legend of Kumararama
According to the Skanda Purana and Brahmanda Purana, the temple’s origin traces back to the fierce battle between the demon king Tarakasura and Lord Kumaraswamy (Kartikeya, the warrior son of Lord Shiva). Tarakasura possessed the divine Amrutha Atma Linga, which he wore around his neck, granting him immortality. Every time Kumaraswamy severed the demon’s body, it would miraculously rejoin.
On the advice of Lord Vishnu, Kumaraswamy targeted the Atma Linga directly, shattering it into five pieces using his divine weapons. To prevent the fragments from reuniting, the pieces were immediately anchored and consecrated by different gods at the locations where they fell. Because this specific piece was installed and pacified by Lord Kumaraswamy himself, the site was named Kumararama
